One of the most difficult things about the BMC Granfondo GF02 Disc Tiagra Bike is deciding where to ride it. It can go everywhere. It can do everything, just about everything short of riding rocky singletrack. But if you put on some narrow slicks, you can race it on the road, install wide knobbies, and it can do ‘cross or light mountain biking. Add a rack and it goes touring. Add fenders and it’s your commuter.

BMC started with their GF01, with the features that make this a comfortable, stable, endurance bike, and teased them out a bit and fabricated out of triple-butted 6000-series aluminum with a full carbon fork. Thanks to slacker angles, less bottom bracket drop, a taller head tube, shorter top tube, and better tire clearance (thanks to disc brakes), they were able to widen the horizons of this bike. And by building it up with budget-minded Shimano Tiagra components, they make it harder to say no to.

The bike is stable, it’s comfortable, it puts your energy into driving the rear wheel, and it steers carefully. This is thanks to their design and engineering know-how. Tuned Compliance Concept (TCC) with the extra benefit of angle compliance can be seen in the rear triangle and the fork. These features provide vertical deflection to eat up bumps and not transmit the shock to your body. The 1 1/2″ lower portion of the steerer tube, the oversized and shaped down tube and tall chain stays contribute to the efficiency.

BMC sweats the details. The brakes mount to posts and the rear mount is nicely placed between the left chain and seat stays. The bike has Dual Transmission Integration, aka internal routing for electronics, if you choose to go for battery-powered shifting. You can swap the mechanical braking for hydraulics. They also chose to equip this bike with a standard 68mm English-threaded bottom bracket. And there are hidden threaded inserts that accept BMC’s rack and fender eyelets. There’s officially room for 35mm tires, though you can squeeze some 38mm balloon tires in there.

This bike stops with mechanical disc brakes, Shimano’s R-571’s, which stop 160mm rotors. The rotors are mounted via Centerlock to Shimano WH-RX05 Disc wheels, which are built for pounding, with 28 spokes and 24mm tall rims. Continental Cyclocross Speed 35mm tires are mounted; these feature a file tread for versatility and shoulder knobs for extra bike off road.

BMC wants their bikes to look as good as they function. That’s why the chose the paint you see as well as the Shimano 105 5700 ten-speed STI levers that stop and shift the bike. These are not only a mechanical improvement over Tiagra, but look much cleaner, thanks to the under-the-tape cable routing.

The BMC Granfondo GF02 Disc Tiagra Bike is hard to say no to.
